Guilherme Tegoni Goedert

Professor / Principal Investigator

Professor Guilherme leads the Labora research group. Guilherme is an applied mathematician, physicist, and computational scientist, currently a Professor at the School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp). He completed a triple Ph.D. through the Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", RWTH Aachen University, and the Cyprus Institute, having received a Marie Curie fellowship. Previously, he earned a Master’s degree in Computational Mathematics and Modeling from IMPA, and a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Brasília. He works on the modeling and simulation of complex systems, focusing on applications in Epidemiology, Public Health, and Evolutionary Dynamics. He also works with HPC (High-Performance Computing), aiming to integrate advanced computing systems and methods into new scientific applications and high social impact projects. Additionally, he focuses on the integration of AI methods and Causal Inference in epidemiological surveillance processes and the evaluation of public health protocols.

Claudio Struchiner

Professor / Principal Investigator

Full Professor at the School of Applied Mathematics (EMAp), Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Holds an MD degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1976), a master's degree in Mathematics from the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (1980) and doctorate in Population Dynamics of Infectious Diseases from Harvard University (1988). He is a CNPq research productivity scholarship holder, retired full-time researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and adjunct professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. Amongst his professional activities, Claudio was also a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at UFRJ, a visiting Professor at the Université de Montreal, Canada, and Fulbright Scholar at Yale University, USA. Experienced in the field of Public Health, with emphasis on Epidemiology, working mainly on the following themes: evaluation of vaccine efficacy, development of epidemiological methods for the study of infectious diseases, and development of quantitative models for describing the dynamics of transmission of infectious agents.

Daniel Csillag

Visiting Researcher

My research is focused on the theory and practice of machine learning and statistics, with a flair of nonparametrics. This includes constructing certifiably robust methods under minimal assumptions, developing a solid theoretical understanding of new and existing practices, designing novel algorithms with improved performance, and applications. I obtained my PhD and BSc at EMAp, and my MSc at IMPA.

Cleber Vinicius Brito dos Santos

Post Doctoral Researcher

Cléber is a veterinarian with a master's and PhD in Epidemiology from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Yale School of Public Health and currently works at the FGV School of Applied Mathematics in collaboration with the Fundação Pense. His research focuses on infectious diseases, investigating the factors that contribute to the emergence of these diseases and their disproportionate impacts on certain groups. Through his work, he seeks to develop prevention strategies by analyzing how specific actions, as well as environmental and behavioral changes, influence the spread of disease. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, watching soccer games, playing sports, and cheering for Bahia.

Ana Letícia Gomes Luz

PhD Student

I have a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the Federal University of Santa Catarina; my thesis was on Chaos Theory. After that, I earned a master’s degree in Applied Computer Science, focused on the development of technologies for the agricultural sector. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation in Applied Mathematics and Data Science.

Gustavo Ewbank Rodrigues Danon

MSc Student

My research focuses on the development and application of machine learning and statistical methods to biological and epidemiological problems. I am particularly interested in infectious diseases, evolutionary dynamics and adapting novel models to biological contexts. My current work combines deep learning, representation learning, and simulation-based inference to study viral evolution and pathogen dynamics, including the analysis of SARS-CoV-2 sequence data. I am also interested in developing interpretable and data-efficient methods for biological and epidemiological applications. I obtained my BSc in Computer Engineering from the Military Institute of Engineering (IME) and am currently pursuing my MSc in Data Science and Applied Mathematics at EMAp, under the supervision of Claudio Struchiner.

Tomás Paiva de Lira

Tomás Paiva de Lira is an undergraduate student in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at FGV EMAp, currently in his last semester. His research focuses on machine learning and statistical learning theory. In particular, he is interested in developing statistical guarantees for black-box models and studying their robustness and stability.

Alessandra Belló Soares

BSc Student

Alessandra is a Data Science and Artificial Intelligence student at the Fundação Getulio Vargas School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp) in Rio de Janeiro, holding a full merit scholarship awarded by the Center for the Development of Mathematics and Sciences (CDMC). Her academic path has been marked by an interest in mathematics, computing, and data science, having been awarded four times in the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP). Her interests include machine learning, predictive modeling, multi-agent systems, simulations, and the application of computational methods to problems in the healthcare field.

Luiz Antônio Alves de Lima

BSc Student

Luiz Antônio Alves de Lima is an undergraduate student in Applied Mathematics at FGV EMAp, currently in his fourth semester. His interests lie primarily in pure mathematics, particularly in abstract structures and fundamental mathematical ideas, with a growing curiosity about geometry, mathematical physics, and proof assistants such as Lean. He is a PICME scholarship recipient and has served as a teaching assistant for Probability in the NES course under Prof. Krerley Oliveira (UFAL). He hopes to contribute to mathematics not only through its applications, but through the discovery of structures and truths that remain hidden from us.

Pedro Henrique Coterli

BSc Student

Pedro Henrique Coterli is an undergraduate student in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at FGV EMAp. A multimedalist in the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP) and a full merit scholarship recipient from CDMC, his academic and professional background merges advanced computing with social and biological applications. He currently works as a Data Science intern at IMDS, developing predictive models for the educational sector, and conducts research in bioinformatics, applying Genomic Language Models to mosquito DNA sequences. His main interests include machine learning, predictive modeling, and AI explainability.

Vinícius Nascimento

BSc Student

Vinícius is a Data Science and Artificial Intelligence student at FGV EMAp in Rio de Janeiro, holding a full merit scholarship from CDMC. A four-time OBMEP medalist (3 silver, 1 bronze) and OBA silver medalist, he brings a strong foundation in mathematics and technology. His experience spans genomics research with machine learning at FGV, advanced mathematics through IMPA's PICME, and FP&A interning at Genial Investimentos with a focus on data automation and financial APIs. His primary interests include machine learning, data engineering, bioinformatics, and computational applications in finance and healthcare.

Roberta Müller Nuñes

BSc Student

Roberta is an undergraduate student in Applied Mathematics at the Fundação Getulio Vargas School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp), holding a full merit scholarship from the Center for the Development of Mathematics and Sciences (CDMC). A five-time medalist in the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP), she also participated five times in the OBMEP Junior Scientific Initiation Program, with an academic background in mathematics, physics, and astrophysics during high school. Her current research focuses on mathematical modeling of malaria interventions and on understanding the influence of climate on vector-borne diseases. Her interests include applying mathematics to public health and global health challenges, developing approaches to expand access to treatments, and studying mathematical and computational methods for predicting and mitigating climate-related crises, particularly those affecting vulnerable populations in Brazil and around the world.
