Guilherme Tegoni Goedert

Professor / Principal Investigator

Professor Guilherme leads the Labora research group. Guilherme is an applied mathematician, physicist, and computational scientist, currently a Professor at the School of Applied Mathematics (FGV EMAp). He completed a triple Ph.D. through the Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", RWTH Aachen University, and the Cyprus Institute, having received a Marie Curie fellowship. Previously, he earned a Master’s degree in Computational Mathematics and Modeling from IMPA, and a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Brasília. He works on the modeling and simulation of complex systems, focusing on applications in Epidemiology, Public Health, and Evolutionary Dynamics. He also works with HPC (High-Performance Computing), aiming to integrate advanced computing systems and methods into new scientific applications and high social impact projects. Additionally, he focuses on the integration of AI methods and Causal Inference in epidemiological surveillance processes and the evaluation of public health protocols.

Claudio Struchiner

Professor / Principal Investigator

Full Professor at the School of Applied Mathematics (EMAp), Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Holds an MD degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1976), a master's degree in Mathematics from the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (1980) and doctorate in Population Dynamics of Infectious Diseases from Harvard University (1988). He is a CNPq research productivity scholarship holder, retired full-time researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation and adjunct professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. Amongst his professional activities, Claudio was also a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at UFRJ, a visiting Professor at the Université de Montreal, Canada, and Fulbright Scholar at Yale University, USA. Experienced in the field of Public Health, with emphasis on Epidemiology, working mainly on the following themes: evaluation of vaccine efficacy, development of epidemiological methods for the study of infectious diseases, and development of quantitative models for describing the dynamics of transmission of infectious agents.

Daniel Csillag

My research is focused on the theory and practice of machine learning and statistics, with a flair of nonparametrics. This includes constructing certifiably robust methods under minimal assumptions, developing a solid theoretical understanding of new and existing practices, designing novel algorithms with improved performance, and applications. I obtained my PhD and BSc at EMAp, and my MSc at IMPA.

After that, I earned a master’s degree in Applied Computer Science, focused on the development of technologies for the agricultural sector. Lara Coelho is a Public Health Researcher at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Evandro Chagas (INI), Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ). She teaches in the graduate programs in Clinical Research in Infectious Diseases at INI/FIOCRUZ and in Public Health Epidemiology at ENSP/FIOCRUZ. She is an investigator with the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), and the International Epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) network. She holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the Sergio Arouca National School of Public Health, FIOCRUZ (2016), a Master's in Clinical Research in Infectious Diseases from the Evandro Chagas Clinical Research Institute, FIOCRUZ (2014), completed her medical residency in Infectious Diseases at the same institute (2012), and earned her M.D. from the Federal University of Goiás (2008).

Carlos Morel is Director of the Center for Technological Development in Health (CDTS) at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), where he also serves as a senior researcher, and is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He is a physician and biophysicist, having earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Pernambuco and his doctorate in biophysics from the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics, UFRJ. From 1998 to 2004 he directed the WHO's Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) in Geneva, and he has helped found several internationally recognized organizations for neglected-disease research, including the Medicines for Malaria Venture, the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development, the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz and as President of FIOCRUZ.
